Happy Wednesday & Happy May! The weather is finally warming up and I am so excited! We are getting ready for beach season - my favorite 🌞
In honor of summer coming, today we are going to talk about a great restaurant down the shore: The Fishin' Pier Grille. They have various locations and the one in Stone Harbor is convenient to everything. I mean, Stone Harbor is a mere three miles, so it is kind of hard for any establishment to be inconvenient. The entire island is walkable. The Fishin' Pier, a breakfast/early lunch spot, is located on 97th Street though, a step away from the main thoroughfare on 96th but still right in the action. Last year, they created a lovely outdoor seating set-up and really killed the take-out game.
On a recent trip down the shore, my parents and I knew we would have to order in breakfast from there at some point. They have a lovely menu, which is long enough to keep things interesting but not so excessive your head starts spinning. There are a variety of egg dishes and griddle options, so anybody can find what they need - savory, sweet, clean, indulgent, vegetarian, what are you looking for? They've got an item to suit your preference.
Last summer my parents got one of the Pier's specialty egg sandwiches and spent the rest of season raving about it. The sandwich is not a regular menu item, popping on and off the specials list, but it is top-tier. This elusive dish is what they were talking about when they said absence makes the heart grow fonder. When the Roscoe, as it is called, appears on the menu, the crowd goes nuts. We are talking actual cheering and fist pumping and whatever it is people do when their team has won the game. On this weekend, we were in luck. Roscoes were available and I was so ready to try my first bite. My dad ordered three to go and I got initiated into this beautiful Egg Sandwich Club.
The Roscoe is named after one of the Fishin' Pier employees and I have to send him my best for the genius he put into designing this sandwich. You've got egg soaking into crispy bacon and chunky tomato, fresh arugula cleansing your palate with every bite, and creamy cheese and avocado melting all over everything. It was simply incredible. It reminded me of the egg sandwiches I used to get from the bodegas in the Bronx. The rivalry between Ram's Deli and Best Deli on Fordham Road was intense. I confess I was kind of a Ram's girl, but there were select dishes that sent me Best Deli's way. Ugh, I love bodegas. They were a special treat, and reconnecting with the memory of them with this delightful sandwich was a beautiful experience.
There is so much more good food where that came from, and I am hoping to get to the Fishin' Pier this summer so I can give you a full run-down of the experience. In the meanwhile, check it out for yourself! I promise you will not be disappointed. In the past, I have to say, I am very much a fan of their omelettes. Also, the staff there? Incredible! The waitresses are so friendly and helpful, and the hostesses are just lovely. You can trust them to make sure you get a great table and enjoy a fabulous meal.
I do not have too much else to say this week. I spent all last Wednesday, my post-vax day, reading, so that was kind of awesome. My soul is coming to life with this warm weather. I am feeling pretty hopeful and excited about the future. It feels wild to think about because for so long it has been hard to plan anything. How can I possibly commit to something two months from now? I don't even know where the world will be next week! It is getting better though. I am starting to feel okay coming up with future ideas and agreeing to commitments that are further past tomorrow. I am also really excited to just go hang outside, touch some grass and feel the sun on my face. So really, all good things over here. I am wishing you all the same.
