Dekalb Market Tacos

Rating: 💋 💋 💋

Remember that cute little apple-picking outing I went on? It was lovely and wholesome, was it not?

What was not so cute was walking off the bus at Port Authority, starving out of my mind. Shocking, but it turns out that eating a pack of cinnamon sugar Belvita biscuits for breakfast and two mini apple cider doughnuts with a cup of cider for lunch, while tasting delicious, does not provide adequate nutrition for a day. I think it might have something to do with the complete lack of protein, but who can be sure?

I followed the girls through the station, fought the Times Square crowds, and got onto the subway as half a human, drained by life, and thinking of one thing and one thing only:

a big, fat, juicy cheeseburger.

Spoiler alert: I never got a cheeseburger.

Oh well.

Instead, we went to the Debalkb Market outside of the Trader Joe's and found this cute little taco vendor. I saw burrito bowls and I was in. I saw there was a breakfast-style bowl and I was in love.

What I loved most was that I didn't just have to pick two or three toppings and get charged half my paycheck for a sliver of avocado. Instead, you got the bowl with your choice of rice and all the toppings known to man, then you picked your protein for an additional $3.50, and were good to go. This brought the total to $15, but it gave me enough food for dinner Saturday AND Sunday night, and it tasted incredible. Unlike, say, Mighty Quinn's, I'd say it was overall a very fair price for that deal.

I chose the breakfast option because duh, and got egg and chorizo along with a beautiful rainbow of toppings that included red cabbage, shredded cheese, red salsa, pico de gallo, roasted corn, black beans, green salsa, guacamole, a drizzle of sour cream, and a cute little lime wedge. All this on top of a beautiful bed of "red" rice - which was actually yellow but was so named because it had tomato in it, which, like, I guesss. The other option was "green" rice, which just means cilantro was involved, and cilantro is a horrible leaf. No way is it crossing my lips if I can do anything to help it.

I helped it and I had an absolutely fabulous time eating my bowl under the Dekalb Market neon lights (it was like being at a club, but for food). I mean, we are talking such a good time I was dancing with joy. It was a true testament to a cause very near and dear to my heart: always remember to feed your girl! Also, in line with the goal of this blog, this bowl truly punched me in the face with its flavor. So much so, it was what I looked forward to all day on Sunday. Getting to eat it again when I was not in a near-starved state also backs up the credibility of the bowl, because it was just as delicious when I wasn't lightheaded. It was not just a need for food thing, this bowl really did outdo itself, hungry or not.

The major upshot was that it made me wish I could eat out all the time. I love cooking, but ugh, it tasted so good.

Please enjoy these photos of Shannon's quesadilla and her hiding from the paps.

Also, if you are ever in Brooklyn, check out the Dekalb Market.

It's a pretty groovy place.

Catch ya later!
