Hello & Happy Wednesday!
While in New York City, I had to stop by and see Kaitlyn. We had not seen each other since July 2020. That is absolute craziness. She and our friends Isabelle and Deirdre had moved into a gorgeous apartment and I was so excited to see them and the new place. My weekend with KT confirmed that NYC is alive and well. I was thrilled to be a part of it! We walked along third avenue and found this really fun spot that had a varied but concise menu of elevated bar food and a Sunday wine special - half off for the bottle. Did we want wine? Yeah, we wanted wine. Banc seemed like the place to go.
The wine - Donini Pinot Grigio delle Venezie - noted honeysuckle and wildflower and had a mild flavor, so it could pair well with anything. The waitress and KT elected me to taste test. It had been so long since I experienced that swish and swirl 'taste the wine and let me know what you think' routine, and I was nervous about whether Kaitlyn would like it. Fortunately, she did! Yay! I would not want to waste our money and wine special on a bad decision.
Kaitlyn ordered the prosciutto and fig flatbread, which came with a fresh garden salad. The earthy flavor of wild mushrooms was brightened by a layer of salty prosciutto, then tampered by the sweet figs, onion and brie. Prosciutto and fig is a tried and true winning combination, and the kitchen at Banc did an excellent job of blending tastes to take a tour of the palate. The addition of truffle oil elevated the flatbread and a slivered almond topping added a nice texture.
I ordered the blackened chicken wrap, which mixed spicy sauce with sweet avocado and cooling lettuce. It was the perfect meal - full of flavor, packed with protein, filling without weighing me down. I also upgraded to sweet potato fries. Apparently their regular fries are really good, but the sweet potato were lovely. I did stop eating them once they cooled down, but what can you do? Banc takes bar food and makes it a little something special. I would be glad to go back.
It was so wonderful getting to see her and catch up on all the tea. We were talking so much I had to remember to eat too. This is the sign of a good dinner, in my opinion. As much as I love food, I would rather risk my plate getting a little cold because I am swept up in the conversation than enjoy a perfect meal in awkward silence because there is simply nothing to say to my dining companions. Not Kaitlyn. She can navigate funny and serious topics with deft precision and always has great jokes and insights. There was so much to catch up on, and so many tangents to go off on! We discussed our summer plans, work updates and any exciting news that we had not yet gotten to report. I was so very happy to be back in New York and hanging out with KT again. It really was the best dinner.
I hope you all have fun plans for the holiday weekend - filled with friends and family and good food! Let's cross our fingers for some nice weather. Happy Fourth of July 💥 🧨
I'll see you next week!

MK
